Giants safety Landon Collins made the game’s most influential plays, and was the best player on the field, as the Giants once again made themselves feel right at home in England with a 17-10 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. The Giants improved to 4-3 at the bye with their second straight victory – and second in as many visits to London, where they beat Miami nine years ago.
Collins, whom the Giants traded up to select with the first pick in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft, led the Giants for the second time in as many seasons with 125 tackles, a franchise record for a safety. In 2016, Collins was twice named NFC Defensive Player of the Week as well as the conference’s Defensive Player of the Month for November. He also became the only player in NFL history to have at least 100 solo tackles, 2.0 sacks, five interceptions, and 12 passes defensed in a season.
A significant reason for the turnaround was the play of safety Landon Collins. The second-year pro became the first player in NFL history to record at least 100 solo tackles, two sacks, five interceptions and 12 passes defended in a season. The breakout year earned Collins a nod on the AP All-Pro team, the Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) All-NFL team and his first trip to the Pro Bowl.
My instinct was fiction, but after going through the position, I think wide receiver is the Giants’ deepest position. Safety is close with youngsters Andrew Adams, Nat Berhe and Darian Thompson joining Landon Collins, but I like the talent at wide receiver better. Obviously, the stars at the top are unquestionable with Odell Beckham Jr. and Brandon Marshall. Sterling Shepard is an excellent slot guy. Tavarres King showed his speed at the cheap Giants jerseys end of last season, and Roger Lewis Jr. has a lot of potential.
But those deficiencies were not fatal because of Collins and a defense that did not allow a point in any of the Rams’ final 11 possessions.
“Big plays right there by Landon,” Manning said. “Obviously, (on) offense we hadn’t done a whole lot. Had a turnover the second play of the game, which is never good. Defense had given up a touchdown, so we were down, but a big play right there. We drove down and got a field goal to make it 10-3, but Landon getting the interception and also putting it in the end zone and scoring right there was a huge play to tie up the game. Switched the momentum for us a little bit.”

Giants’ wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. comes in at No. 45, one of only two wide receivers to make the ranking. Jets wide receiver Brandon Marshall is the other, at No. 67. Beckham set the record last season for the most receiving yards in NFL history through his first two seasons and has already totaled 25 career touchdowns.
The Steelers have done a pretty good job against opposing number one wide receivers this season. Just three have surpassed the century mark (the Redskins’ DeSean Jackson, the Jets’ Brandon Marshall, the Cowboys’ Dez Bryant) and six were held to less than 80 receiving yards. Antonio Brown has led the Steelers in receiving yards in four of their last five games with at least 85 yards in four of those five contests.
“I learned football by watching videos of the receivers I like on YouTube, and I like guys that are the same size as me, like Brandon Marshall,” Dable said. “I think I play like Brandon Marshall. I like how he moves after the catch, with his size.”
Dable understands it’s important for him to use his size to his advantage and that can be done both inside and outside.
Draft gurus don’t wait for the entire draft order to be set before releasing their first mock drafts, so they definitely don’t wait for free agency. They should, though, because those are the two main avenues that front offices take to fill their needs. And, naturally, they depend on each other. While this free agency period wasn’t as momentous as last year’s for the Giants – it rarely is or will be in the future – general manager Jerry Reese and company still made some major moves, notably placing the franchise tag on Jason Pierre-Paul and signing Brandon Marshall. So simple math says defensive end and wide receiver won’t be major needs come late April.
